Michaelmas: The Festival that Changes Everything

There are many wonderful festivals that celebrate past events in the course of human evolution, but there is only one Festival of the Future: Michaelmas. Michaelmas is more of a “call to action” than a celebration. It requires us to become attentive to our own becoming and to take hold of ourselves. It can be considered a Festival of “Enlightenment” if we take it up with enthusiasm and utmost seriousness.

Rudolf Steiner describes a beautiful picture of the activity of Michael’s rulership, in which our thinking reaches upwards, in order to “grasp the hands of Michael reaching down from above.” The living thinking that becomes possible, changes the way we see the world, which changes our whole way of being and enlivens the world that we behold. Thus everything is in a process of transformation if we participate in it! What holds us back? There are two obstacles that must be overcome: “Fear of the Spiritual World and Paralysis of the Will.” (Prokofieff, “The Cycle of the Year as a Path of Initiation.”)

We will explore these themes.

Rev. Carol Kelly was ordained in The Christian Community on March 17, 2001. She has worked as a congregational priest in Spring Valley and Washington DC, and is currently active in the Taconic/Berkshire congregation. She was the Director of The Christian Community Children’s Camp for 23 years. She is a choir director and has great enthusiasm for working with teen-agers and young adults in navigating an ever-changing and challenging world.
