Poems and music from the volume Given, featuring “Some Further Words,” and Sonata at Payne’s Hollow, a short verse play, — or rather a ceremony as Mr. Berry refers to it — is a love story performed by the two ghosts. Harlan was a landscape painter and mandolin player. Anna was a fiddler and gardener. They created a home out of sticks and driftwood, stone and flotsam and jetsam from the river. A home where they lived until the end of their lives away from the mainstream of civilization. From the land of the dead, they meet on the River’s edge in the ruins of their former home. The poems are supported by musical interludes and interactions between the actors and musicians.
