The Class of 2033: Waldorf at War

ONLINE LECTURE BY EUGENE SCHWARTZ

Since the one hundredth anniversary of the founding of the first Waldorf school, the American Waldorf movement has been undergoing rapid transformation. The 2020 Covid pandemic compelled schools to close their doors and rapidly accept the Internet as a substitute for the classroom, a new activist spirit arose in response to racism and gender issues, and Rudolf Steiner was denounced — by the Waldorf schools’ own Association.

In tandem with this disruption, a chorus of European Waldorf leaders has been calling for the “decolonization” and “dehierarchization” of the Waldorf curriculum, encouraging schools and teachers to deconstruct the anthroposophical foundations of Waldorf methodology.

Eugene Schwartz contends that the fourteen years from 2019 to 2033 will determine the future course of Waldorf education — if Waldorf does, indeed, have a future. In his lecture, he will examine the profound reverberations that the struggles of the Waldorf movement will have in relation to its sister movements and to the viability of Anthroposophy in America.
